Paint roller tray vs bucket grid

A tray is what most people picture. Many pros skip it for a 5 gallon bucket with a grid hung inside. Both load a roller; they differ in capacity, mess and how often you stop.

Short answer

Use a 9 inch tray (with liners) for a room or two, small amounts of paint, and color changes. Use a 5 gallon bucket with a roller grid for whole houses, ceilings, exteriors and wide 14 to 18 inch rollers: it holds far more paint, rarely tips, and needs fewer refills. A paint pail with a built-in grid suits minis and ladder work.

Our take

If you are painting one or two rooms, a tray with liners is simpler and cheaper. If you are painting a whole house, ceilings or an exterior, the bucket and grid saves time and spills, especially with a pole or a wide roller. No maker comparison of the two exists that we could find, so this is practical tradeoff, not test data.

Questions people ask

What size paint tray do I need?

Match the tray to the roller: a 9 inch tray for a 9 inch roller, a mini tray for 4 to 6 inch rollers. Wide 14 and 18 inch rollers need a wide tray or a bucket with a wide grid.

Are paint tray liners worth it?

For latex, liners save the cleanup of the tray and make color changes quick. Make sure the liner matches your tray’s size and shape, and do not leave paint skinning in a liner overnight.

How do you use a bucket grid?

Hang the grid inside a 5 gallon bucket, pour in a few gallons of paint, dip the roller into the paint, and roll it up and down the grid to spread the paint and remove the excess. Lid the bucket when you break.

Is a paint tray or grid better for ceilings?

A bucket and grid, for most people. You can stand the bucket on the floor and reload from a pole without bending over a tray, and it holds enough paint to finish a large ceiling without refills.
